Welcome to the East Midlands Branch
ON SHAKY GROUND? BUILDING TO SURVIVE AN EARTHQUAKE - 8th June 2010
This presentation will be given by Dr Adam Crewe, Senior Lecturer in Earthquake Engineering in the Department of Civil Engineering at Bristol University. Dr Crewe's main interests lie in the field of nonlinear dynamics of structures and he is currently involved in a number of UK and European Union funded projects.
Recent events in Haiti have once again reminded us of the fragility of much of the world’s infrastructure. Indeed over the last 100 years earthquakes are estimated to have killed more than a million people throughout the world and to have caused billions of pounds of damage. There are however a significant number of engineers and researchers working to protect existing structures from the effects of earthquakes and working to develop new ways to improve the performance of structures.
Using pictures of actual earthquake damage, “On Shaky Ground” will explore some of the basic principles that Earthquake Engineers use to protect structures during earthquakes. The talk will look at how buildings fail, various strengthening techniques available and consider the possibility of designing earthquake proof buildings in the future. However all the recent advances in design and construction techniques that can reduce the devastation caused by earthquakes are for nothing if engineers cannot persuade clients and governments to implement them ? if we cannot do this then we really are “on shaky ground”.
This will be a very interesting and informative presentation, and we do hope you can attend. Of course Dr Crewe will be available to answer any questions.
Further details, including booking details, can be found on our meetings page, via the link in the left hand panel.
FORUM & FEEDBACK
The East Midlands Branch is trying to encourage the use of the web site to communicate with it`s members, and to use the facilities available, such as the message forum.
Please do try & visit the forum, by clicking on the link in the left hand menu. You never know you may have a subject that raises a flood of replies.
Any feedback regarding technical meetings would be appreciated, and will help us to be a much more responsive branch. It will also enable us to provide a more interesting and varied selection of meetings in future.
If you have any direct questions or comments and would rather not enter them in the forum, then please send them by email to any member of the committee.
