The revised Kenneth Severn Award was launched in 2006 to commemorate Kenneth Severn, Past President of IStructE 1972-3 and is supported by the late Mr Severn's family, the Educational Trust and IStructE. Under its new guidelines, the Award is aimed at encouraging younger members of the structural engineering community to enthuse about the profession, and entry is NOT restricted to membership of the Institution.
Each year, the subject for the entered papers is chosen by the current President (see below for the subject of this year's Award). In judging the entries, consideration is given to originality, the contribution to the profession of structural engineering and clarity of presentation.
The winning papers are published in The Structural Engineer (subject to appropriate review), and the author receives a prize of £500 and the Kenneth Severn Diploma, both of which are presented at IStructE's Annual Conference. The author is also invited to present their winning submission at this event.
