Structural Special Commendation 2004
Buro Happold
New Hanger, TAG Farnborough Airport - Hampshire, UK
The solution for this large aircraft hangar could have been a very large unattractive boxlike building. Instead there is an interesting yet attractive rolling roofline that rises and falls over the three separate hangar zones which successfully reduces the visual bulk of the structure.
Internally the structure is plain to see and its function and behaviour easy to follow. There has been significant attention to detail that gives even the connections of this large steel framed building a sense of quality and of being special.
