BSI Code Development

The Institution is represented on a number of the BSI code writing committees producing standards which are relevant to Structural Engineers. These individuals support the interests of the Institution and Members by ensuring that their knowledge and expertise are fed into the production of UK standards and National Annexes to European codes. A number of these codes and standards are referenced in the Building Regulations Approved Documents and are subsequently used extensively throughout the UK by Structural Engineers.

A full list of the committees on which we currently have representation, and the names of our representatives can be found here. There are a few committees where representation is required and the position is vacant. A list of these committees can be found here. Please contact John Littler for more information if you are interested.

The Institution keeps members up-to-date with an occasional series of briefing reports in its fortnightly journal The Structural Engineer. These briefing reports, called 'Standards News', cover new and updated standards as well as notifications of standards which are being withdrawn or confirmed for continual use. Visit The Structural Engineer's website for more information.

Drafts for Public Comment

A British Standard which is nearing completion goes out for peer review. A draft is made available on the BSI website where it can be viewed by any member of the public once they have gone through the free registration process. A list of drafts can be viewed without registration here.

The process of commenting on a draft is open to anyone. Members who wish to make comments are encouraged to do so directly to BSI.

Where they have been supplied by our representatives, hard copies of these drafts can be viewed by visiting the library at Institution Headquarters. Contact the Library Manager, Rob Thomas for more information.

Viewing or Purchasing a Standard

Our Library stocks a wide range of current and superseded standards relevant to the Structural Engineer including the latest Eurocodes and their UK National Annexes. These are available to view by visiting the Institution's Library. Contact the Library Manager, Rob Thomas for more information.

Standards from BSI can be bought through the BSI Bookshop. They are also available electronically to subscribers of the Construction Information Service (CIS) from IHS.
