About the committee

The Engineering Practice Committee is chaired by a Vice-President and made up of the President, panel chairpersons and up to twelve others. There are also currently eight corresponding members worldwide.

The committee meets four times a year and reports all activities to the Board of the Institution of Structural Engineers.

Membership of the Engineering Practice Committee is a good way to play an active role in industry developments and form lasting partnerships with relevant organisations and government agencies.

Membership of the committee involves attending meetings, assisting the work of study groups and acting as a point of contact for the committee. As a member you'll have full access to all Engineering Practice Committee meeting minutes and other related documents.

Responsibilities

To oversee the activities of the following panels; Health and Safety, Research, Sustainable Construction and Technical Publications

  • To be responsible for developing and implementing policy concerning technical matters related to structural engineering
  • To promote and encourage research relative to structural engineering and its use in practise
  • To keep under review legislation, codes, standards and other matters affecting the profession
  • To form (and disband) study groups, and to appoint their convenors
  • To consider and (where seen fit) to appoint and remove Institution representatives on outside bodies primarily of a technical engineering nature
  • To agree and oversee work on technical projects
  • To liaise with other relevant organisations and government agencies
  • To act as the point of contact between the Institution and the Earthquake Engineering Field Investigation Team (EEFIT)
