Nuclear Standards Study Group

About us

The purpose of the Nuclear Standards Study Group is to identify and promote common standards for structural engineering of nuclear facilities. The study group will not produce standards but will make the case for their production by relevant bodies, which might include the Institution. Representatives from nuclear site operators, designers/contractors and regulators are invited to contribute. The primary focus is on UK practice, but contributors from outside the UK are also welcome.

The scope of the study group includes all civil applications and support and waste management activities for military sites, but excludes military applications such as weapons and warship propulsion.

Topics covered:

  • The need for common standards for nuclear structural engineering
  • To identify existing standards, whether international, national or proprietary
  • To look for gaps in the availability of suitable standards
  • To identify existing proprietary standards which might be converted to industry standards. Some such standards are currently regarded as de facto good practice, but limits of applicability and copyright issues may exist
  • Where a new or updated standard is required, to identify a route for its production
  • Structural issues on nuclear facilities
