Structural Analysis and Design Education Study Group

About us

The Structural Analysis and Design Education Study Group was set up to discuss the challenges in the education and training of engineers. It is not intended that the study group should be the reserve of academia; indeed industry collaboration and contribution to the work of the group is essential.

Topics covered:

  • Current issues in design teaching (or indeed the ability of research-based academics to cover design adequately at all)
  • The role of the underpinning mechanics and qualitative understanding of behaviour, as compared with analytical techniques
  • The balance of responsibility between the academic and in-practice phases of training in the formation of engineers
  • The increasing intrusion of 'soft' topics into academic programmes of finite length
