Task groups
Task groups are set up by the Institution to undertake work to revise, update or produce a particular publication and are disbanded when the task has been completed. Typically task groups run for two to three years. The current task groups in operation are as follows:
Building for a sustainable future (2nd edition)
It is planned that the revision will be published in 2012. For further information, contact the Technical department.
Eurocode 7 Manual (geotechnical)
This task group is preparing a manual for the geotechnical design of structures to Eurocode 7 which will reflect the full Eurocode (BS EN1997) and UK National Annex. It is anticipated that the Manual will be published in 2012. For further information, contact the Technical department.
Philosophy of structural design
This task group has been set up to update the following four Institution reports: Communication of structural design (1975) Aims of structural design (1987) Stability of buildings (1988) The achievement of structural adequacy in buildings (1990)
Since these reports were first published much has changed in the world and our industry. We all now have a more global view and information technology has changed in ways unforeseen when the documents were first conceived and climate change is affecting us all.
The 1975 and 1987 publications have been merged and expanded to form Structural design - the engineer's role (published September 2011) while the other two titles will be merged to form "structural design - achieving excellence", which is due to be published late 2012. For further information, contact the Technical department.
Risk in structural engineering
This task group is preparing a report that will be written specifically for structural engineers responsible for designing or managing structures. It will address the management of risk to the health or safety of any person, or damage to the environment, resulting from the design or execution of construction, maintenance, deterioration, repair or rehabilitation of a structure. It is anticipated that the report will be published in 2012. For further information, contact the Technical Department.
