Wind Loading and Wind Tunnel testing

Meeting date: 12 October 2010

Meeting type: Branch event (click here for branch page)

Association: Midland Counties

Day: Evening Meeting

Event information

Speaker: Professor Chris Baker,

Professor of Environmental Fluid Mechanics, University of Birmingham

This talk will give an overview of wind loading phenomenon on buildings and other structures, and will then address the various tools that are available for evaluating wind loads for design purposes. In most circumstances, for relatively simple structures, designers will use codes of practice. The current UK code is BS6399, although this will shortly be replaced by the new Eurocode EN 1991-1-4 and the associated National Annex. The basis of this new code and its annex will be outlined, and the main differences from BS6399 highlighted. For more complex structures, the designer may be required to commission wind tunnel tests, or computational fluid dynamics calculations. The basics of such tests and calculations, and the assumptions that underlie them, will be described, and their applicability and limitations will be discussed. Finally brief comments will be made on possible future developments in the calculation of wind loading.

Refreshments at 6:00 pm
