Long Span Cable Stayed Bridges
Tuesday 7th September 2010 - 5:30pm for 6:15pm at The Royal Society of Edinburgh – RSE , 22-26 George Street, Edinburgh, EH2 2PQ : Refreshments available from 5.30pm
Speaker: Steve Kite, Associate Director, Arup.
Stonecutters Bridge in Hong Kong was opened to traffic at the end of 2009. With its main span of 1018m it is the second longest cable stayed bridge in the world. The bridge carries the new high level Route 8 expressway over the Rambler Channel between Kowloon and Tsing Yi Island, providing an alternative and faster route to the airport, and enhanced links to the container terminals. The design of the bridge was dominated by the aggressive wind climate in an area prone to typhoons, and construction techniques needed to account for the commercial shipping operations in the waterway below.
Steve spent 6 years in Hong Kong working on Stonecutters Bridge and helped the project progress through detailed design, contract documentation and construction. During the design phase he was responsible for the concrete back spans which act to anchor the huge main span. On site he was the Chief Technical Officer reviewing the Contractor’s method statements and monitoring the construction works.
