The Young Members' Panel represents the views of younger members of the profession and develops initiatives to benefit those members.

Under the chairmanship of Roger Knipe, the panel liaises with other panels and committees within the Institution to ensure that the voice of the young engineer is heard.

The panel has been raising the awareness and interest of young people in the profession through a number of measures including visiting universities to give presentations on the Institution, the benefits of membership and the industry in general.

The panel are always considering ways in which the industry and Institution can be brought to the attention of a wider, younger audience.

MEng, Structural Engineering with Architecture, Queen's University, Belfast, 2006

Employer: Scott Wilson
Position: Structural Engineer

Experience/projects
Belfast printing works: Installation of two new printing presses which involved removing the existing floor to cast a concrete base and raise the roof. All without disrupting the printing operations on the other two presses. A job which had to be millimetre perfect!

Royal Victoria hospital, Belfast: Support for a listed Victorian corridor structure whilst a new tunnel was excavated beneath it.

Bombardier CSeries building: Project engineer responsible to the steel superstructure of the new factory building. Main challenges are the extremely demanding design and construction programme, technical requirements for overhead cranes which can only tolerate very small deflections in the roof trusses.

Specialist interests
Folded plate timber roofs: My dissertation won the national TRADA timber engineering student prize. Timber engineering still holds great interest for me.

Old buildings: one of my ambitions is to work on the restoration of a prominent historic structure.

Production and process engineering structures, particularly the interface between structure and plant, and overhead cranes.
