By 2010, the Structural Eurocodes will have replaced current British Standards as the primary basis for designing buildings and civil engineering structures in the UK. Structural engineers therefore have a maximum of three years in which to negotiate the transition from traditional methods of design to formal limit state methods using partial factors. Although the code aims to retain the fundamentals of sound geotechnical design, some of its processes will be unfamiliar and potentially confusing.
This course explains the Principles and Application Rules given in Eurocode 7, discusses how they should be interpreted and applied, and illustrates the impact of the new code by practical hands-on calculations in worked examples.
Course Overview
• Introduction to the Structural Eurocodes
• Basis of geotechnical design
• Spread foundations
- traditional design of spread foundations
- design of spread foundations to Eurocode 7
• Pile foundations
- traditional design of pile foundations
- design of pile foundations to Eurocode 7
• Retaining structures
- traditional design of retaining structures
- design of retaining structures to Eurocode 7
Tutors
Brian Simpson, OBE, FREng, MA, PhD, FICE, Eur Ing, is a director of Ove Arup & Partners Ltd and a principal of Arup Geotechnics. He is a Visiting Professor at City University and Special Professor at the University of Nottingham. Brian has a particular interest in the decision-making process of design. and has been involved in the development of Eurocode 7 (Geotechnical Design), having been a member of its drafting panels and vice-chairman of the CEN (Comité Européen de Normalisation) committee on Eurocode 7. He was lead author of a Commentary on Eurocode 7 published by EMAP, and has recently published papers on European comparisons of retaining wall designs. He is the current chairman of the BSI committee on geotechnical codes, B/526, in which the topic of pile design is much under debate for the National Annex of Eurocode 7.
