The Kenneth Severn Award
The Kenneth Severn Award is granted to the best submission from a young engineer in response to a question set by the current President.
The Award commemorates Kenneth Severn, President of the Institution from 1972 - 1973 and is supported by the late Mr Severn's family and the Educational Trust.
The subject of the paper is chosen each year by the new President and announced shortly after their inauguration. The award is open to members and non-members of the Institution who have not reached their 28th birthday by 1 January on year of entry.
The winner will receive a diploma and a prize of £500. The winning paper is also published in The Structural Engineer (subject to appropriate review).
In judging this award, consideration is given to originality, the contribution to the profession of structural engineering, and clarity of presentation.
The 2012 question:
A good structural engineer has value way beyond his/her cost to his/her client. How can that simple message be relayed with the pressures on everyone looking at the bottom line rather than what is included within that?
To enter the Kenneth Severn Award, please submit a paper titled “Cost vs Value” of no more than 4 sides of A4 including images to events@istructe.org by Friday 30 March 2012. Points will be awarded for originality, the value of the paper to the structural engineering profession and clarity of presentation.
Entrants for the Kenneth Severn Award must be 28 years of age or under on 1 January 2012. Entry is NOT restricted to membership of the Institution.
