Awards for Papers Published in The Structural Engineer

The Papers Awards Judging Panel has decided that awards should be made as follows:

Oscar Faber AwardOscar Faber Award

For papers presented for discussion at Evening Meetings or colloquia of the Institution during the session.

A Diploma was awarded to Ian Firth for his paper 'Lessons from History – The Steel Box Girder Story' presented for discussion on the 25 February 2010 and published in The Structural Engineer on the 2 March 2010

Henry Adams AwardHenry Adams Award

For papers that relate to structural engineering research and/or development, published during the session in The Structural Engineer.

This year two Diplomas were awarded in this category.

One was awarded to Professor Ian Burgess, Dr Buick Davison, Dr Yong Chang Wang, Professor Roger Plank, Dr Hongxia Yu, Dr Xianghe Dai and Professor Colin Bailey, for their paper 'The safety of common steel beam/column connections in fire' published on 2 November 2010. Dr Hongxia Yu, Dr Xianghe Dai and Professor Bailey could not attend.

The other was awarded to John Orr, Professor Tim Ibell, Dr Anthony Darby, Professor Steve Denton and Dr Jonathan Shave, for their paper: 'Shear design of circular concrete sections using the Eurocode 2 truss model' published on 7 December 2010. Professor Steve Denton was unable to attend.

Murray Buxton AwardMurray Buxton Award

For papers of general interest published in The Structural Engineer.

Diplomas in this category were awarded to Ben Tricklebank and Damian Eley, for their paper ‘Unilever’s ‘flying carpets' published on 16 February 2010

Guthrie Brown AwardGuthrie Brown Award

For papers published in The Structural Engineer written by a member or members under 40 years of age.

The Medal and Certificate were presented to Dr Mauro Overend for his paper 'Recent developments in design methods for glass structures' published on 20 July 2010

Derrington Construction AwardDerrington Construction Award

For papers that refer to construction and/or health and safety, published in The Structural Engineer during the year.

The Medal and Certificate were presented to Robert Clarke, for his paper 'Role of the structural engineer in demolition' published on 2 June 2010

Husband PrizeHusband Prize

For papers of merit related to bridges, published in The Structural Engineer during the session

The Prize was awarded to Manvindarjit Ahluwalia, Krishna Ganasalingam, Harold Marais and David Phillips, for their paper 'Design and construction of Wembley Stadium Station Footbridge' published on 2 March 2010. David Phillips was unable to attend.
