Research Award
Research grants awarded to individuals or collaborative groups based in industry or academe
This scheme funds the development of innovative new research areas in structural engineering and facilitates additional aspects of ongoing research.
Applications are now invited for the 2012 scheme which offers two grants of £5000.
The awards, funded by the Institution’s Research Fund, are open to researchers in industry and academe or collaborative groups.
Applications need to be submitted by Friday 13 April using the form available here. Applicants will be advised of the outcome by the end of June 2012.
Judging criteria
Applications will be judged primarily on technical quality and then on impact to industry, benefit to members, value for money and benefit to society.
Who can apply?
This is an open award meaning that individuals based in industry or academe and at any stage of their career can apply. Teams or collaborative groups can also apply.
Conditions

projects must begin within 6 months of the award being made

a written account of the research plus a presentation at a branch evening technical meeting and/or a poster must be delivered within two years of beginning the project
-
applications can be made from work that forms part of a larger project. However, in this case the application must state exactly what element the grant sum would fund within the project

the grant is to be paid in two stages: £4000 upfront and £1000 on delivery of a paper plus a branch presentation and/or poster

2011 Grant holders
Two awards of £5000 were made in 2011:
Dr Prakash Kripakaran of University of Exeter will investigate the application of non-linear elastic wave spectroscopy for the early detection of delamination in fibre reinforced polymer retrofitted concrete structural elements. View Dr Prakash Kripakaran's entry.
