Structural Award Categories 2012

  • Structural Heritage Award – for excellence in the structural design of a building or infrastructure-related project, where the style and integrity of the original heritage structure is maintained through restoration, conservation, extension or refurbishment.

  • Award for Pedestrian Bridges – for excellence in the structural design of pedestrian or similar light bridge structures.

  • Award for Commercial or Retail Structures – for excellence in the structural design of buildings or retail complexes.

  • Award for Education or Healthcare Structures – for excellence in the structural design of buildings and structures, such as schools, colleges and hospitals.

  • Award for Community or Residential Structures – for excellence in the structural design of a structure providing demonstrable benefit to the local environment, residents or community. Examples include housing schemes, care homes and community centres.

  • Award for Arts or Entertainment Structures – for excellence in the structural design of buildings and structures, such as theatres, galleries and large structural sculpture.

  • Award for Sports or Leisure Structures – for excellence in the structural design of buildings and structures, such as stadia, sports halls and ski jumps.

  • Award for Small Practices – for excellence in structural engineering design as executed by a small practice. This is defined as a practice employing up to 10 staff engaged in structural design who between them generate a maximum annual fee income of £1m.

  • Award for Small Projects – for excellence in the structural engineering design of a project with a construction cost of under £2 million.

  • Sustainability Award – for excellence in structural design, where outstanding commitment to sustainability and respect for the environment is integral to the structural design. Entries are considered on merit by the Structural Awards judging panel from those eligible projects entered against the principal categories.

  • Award for Highway or Railway Bridge Structures - for excellence in the structural design of bridges carrying highways and/or railways.

  • Award for Infrastructure or Transportation Structures - for excellence in the structural design of buildings or other structures, such as stations, airport buildings and factories or industrial buildings.

  • Supreme Award for Engineering Excellence – for the finest example of structural engineering design. It is awarded to the winner of one of the above categories.
