Associate-Membership written examination

Approved student members must pass this examination to obtain incorporated status, AMIStructE, with this Institution. Graduate members approved to sit the Chartered Membership examination are eligible to sit this examination if they so wish but must inform the Membership Department that this is there intention. The examination requires the candidate to consider the details of a construction project presented in much the same way that a brief and proposed design solution would be passed to the design office by a chartered structural engineer.

The examination is seven hours long, there are 4 questions, one of which must be answered and each question is divided into two parts. Section 1 tests the candidate's knowledge of structural engineering design practice, including drawing and detailing, and the conveying of design information on the site. Section 2 establishes whether the candidate is familiar with Incorporated engineer's normal responsibilities for managing and organising construction processes in a structural engineering office. BOTH parts of the question must be satisfactorily answered to achieve a pass in the examination. The marking split is 30:70 per question.
