Hong Kong Registered Engineer?
Hi

We received an enquiry for a project in Hong Kong. I'm not sure the exact scope of the project as yet but, have been asked if we are "Hong Kong Registered"?

Do we need to be registered there and if so how do we go about it?

Darryl, they are probably referring to HKIE membership. If you are Chartered for the past two years, you may apply for Chartered Member through Mutual Recognition Agreement. You may want to check out their website on how to proceed an application. However it is not essential to have HKIE unless your client insists, MIStructE membership is widely recognised in Hong Kong region. Hope it helps.

There is currently a big 'hula' about the future mutual recognition between the two Institutions and further agreement will have to be reached before both structural examinations are to be recognized by each other in the future!

We are not exactly sure how this is developed but hopefully MIStructE = MHKIE still and vice versa in the future. After attaining MHKIE you can apply for Registered Professional Engineer (RPE) after 1 year of local experience, issued by HKIE. RSE is another matter where application will be via Hong Kong Building Department (BD) and you will need to have signification amount of experience before such application, and will be assessed by a panel of examiners.

I think what they mean by that is to be a "Registered Structural Engineer" or "Registered Geotechnical Engineer", usually refered to as RSE or RGE.  In Hong Kong, depending on the projects.  The design will need to be submitted to the Building Department before you can start construction.  In order to do that, you will need to submit your structural design via someone who is a RSE or RGE.  You may find out more info at the HKIE website.  Hope that helps.
