RE: An ethical issue
i think you should draw a clear line between religion and profession. when you say the 'right thing' do you mean it is an economic and stable solution because that is your first obligation as a chartered engineer. just like religion has rules one should abide by so does engineering. the Istructe has rules of professional conduct that chartered engineers should abide by. please refer to this and show them to your employer. your employer should not fire you because you complied with the rules of professional conduct...if they do then you have every right to sue them!

RE: An ethical issue
Hi. I'm not a Christian, but I've been a Humanist for nearly fifty years, so ethics are something that I'm very interested in. Is it possible for you to explain the situation? Another route that you could try, if appropriate, would be as a whistle-blower at the SCOSS website. I understand that you can report on something potentially dangerous, in strict confidence. If you would like to contact me privately, I'll happily post my e-mail address.

Hi folks, I came across this recently. It may be of interest to some. Its a link to an E-petition to try and get the title of Engineer protected. http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/6271

I agree. Unfortunately, the great & the good of our profession don't always agree. Recently on Radio 4, there was a prominent engineer who was being interviewed over The Queen Elizabeth Engineering Prize, who explicitly said that a repair-man should be called an engineer. These people are above the rough & tumble of us ordinary engineers. They don't have to deal with clients who think that our role is merely to 'get Building Regs'.

RE: An ethical issue
I read the following in a Canadian newspaper: http://thechronicleherald.ca/homesnews/43431-home-inspection-red-flags "Most importantly, don’t seek out the cheapest home inspector you can find, as they tend to be the ones with the least experience and therefore may have the highest risk to the homebuyer." (For 'home inspector', read 'surveyor'.) My impression is that in the UK, that message isn't heard. Clients seem to go for the cheapest price, so far as I can tell.
