The Design of the Burj Khalifa Foundations

The Burj Khalifa (previously known as the Burj Dubai) is currently the tallest man made structure ever built. The official height is an amazing 828m.

Hyder Consulting were the engineer and architect of record for the structure and were also responsible for the challenging foundation design.

This technical presentation will reveal the challenges of designing foundations for such a structure in the sands of Dubai, catering for seismic and wind loading, and also the unusual fact that the final height of the tower had not yet been fixed. The solution for the tower involved 194 piles each 45m long and over 45,000m3 of concrete.

International IABSE Spring Conference - Assessment, Upgrading and Refurbishment of Infrastructures

	Preface

The Dutch and Belgian IABSE groups organise May 6-8, 2013 an International Conference dedicated to the very important topic for our society to keep our infrastructure in a good condition. IABSE, the International association for Bridge and Structural Engineering is a scientific / technical Association compromising about 4.000 members in 100 countries, counting 48 Nationals Groups worldwide. Thus IABSE offers the platform for exchange of knowledge, opinions and ideas to explore new ways for this global problem.

The co-operation between scientists and practitioners in IABSE proved to be an enrichment, leading to new ideas en initiatives for over 80 years now. In the field of construction materials and construction many changes can be noted. For progress nowadays working together in an International context is a must. In a fast changing world the considerable devolpments and challenges ask for a general and common approach and also bundling of forces. New material and construction types challenge the imagination of designing. The implementation of life cycle design is stimulated by ecological and economical constraints. Infrastructure is not only designed for safety and serviceability, but as well for flexibility and adaptability. Maintenance and upgrading of structures move to the centre of interest.

IABSE agreed upon the organisation of the 2013 Spring Conference dedicated to this subject held in the Netherlands.

Ockley Windmill - Surrey Regional Group 2012 Summer Event

The owner of this windmill in the Surrey Hills countryside has kindly offered to provide an insight to the rebuilding of a local windmill. Peter James rebuilt the windmill from the remaining brick base upwards, starting in 2007 and the building is now in its final stages of fit out.

This octagonal smock mill was variously known as Elmer’s Windmill or Almer's Mill and was built near the centre of Ockley, Surrey. The mill was erected in 1803 for Robert Harrison of Harley Street, London, by Thomas Coldman.

The Coldman family steered their mill through calm and tempest with a steadfastness grinding of grain by the power of the wind. Until eventually the mill ceased working. From around 1912 it was left to resist the weather as best it might. Obstinately the mill stood on, confounding many gloomy prophecies, until it collapsed suddenly-allegedly in a dead calm-on 23rd November, 1944.

After the mill collapsed and the debris was removed (the metalwork went to the war effort), the base was roofed over using the old upright shaft as a ridge piece; fowls were housed within. Eventually this use even ceased and dereliction set in once again until Peter, the current owner, arrived on the scene............... From that point on a meticulous and well-engineered resurrection of the original windmill has been taking place.

Young Members Site Visit - Lancashire County Cricket Club, Phase 2a

The Young Members’ Group of the Lancashire and Cheshire Branch have organised a unique opportunity to visit the redevelopment of the Lancashire County Cricket Club currently under construction. The site visit will include a brief introduction to the design and construction of the project followed by a tour of the site. This site visit, held in conjunction with Main Contractor Morgan Sindall and Capita Symonds Structures, will enable visitors to see the new facilities being created and gain an understanding of the technical challenges faced by the team in design and construction of this project.

Lancashire County Cricket who occupy Old Trafford Cricket Ground are undertaking a major redevelopment of the site to upgrade the environment to meet new English Cricket Board standards and provide for the Club’s projected needs over the next 50 years. Working with BDP architectural practice and Capita Symonds Structures, Lancashire County Cricket Club and Cre8 Management have developed an all en-compassing phased masterplan which not only aims to meet the English Cricket Board brief but also spark a programme of regeneration in the Old Trafford area.

As part of the second phase of the development, three new structure sare currently being completed on site, with a series of sectional handovers to be achieved in time for the England one day international matches in July and September. These structures are the new Players and Media building and two grandstand terraces.

The Players and Media Building provides enhanced media facilities for both TV and Radio coverage of matches, complete with press conference, players changing/dressing rooms and site maintenance facilities. This uses an internal high level truss to provide a large clear span zone for the press box, allowing a fully glazed facade to be incorporated and give uninterrupted views across the pitch. The new grandstand terraces are in the form of a steel frame supporting a double tier seating arrangement, with all seats designed to IStructE guidelines for concert use. The upper tier of seating is offset from the lower column grid, achieved by using a complex transfer truss arrangement at high level.

John Dowling's presentation will focus on the most cost effective ways to achieve significant operational carbon emissions reduction in modern new build construction. The presentation will also discuss embodied carbon emissions in buildings and how to carry out carbon footprint assessments.
Embodied Carbon

The drive for sustainable construction requires a collaborative approach over a wide range of issues, but one which is clearly the principal responsibility of the structural engineer is the embodied energy and carbon of the building structure. Whilst this is not a technically difficult topic and the science is imprecise, it is unfamiliar to many.

This presentation therefore sets out to explain the principles of estimating the embodied carbon of a building, and the sources of useful data. Some general observations are included about the importance of embodied carbon in relation to other impacts, and issues such as the variability and uncertainties in the data are discussed. Practical advice is given about what structural engineers can do to help reduce the carbon footprint of buildings, and some simple examples are included to illustrate the application of the principles.
