Electronic journal of structural engineering
The only electronic-only journal on the subject the Institution is aware of. One volume has been produced annually since 2001.

Highways Agency
The design manual for roads and bridges (BAs, BDs etc), manual of contract documents for highway works (including the specification for highway works) and interim advice notes are all now available.

Modern Steel Construction

The BSI catalogue can be freely searched here but a subscription is required for access to the full text

The Construction Information Service - index only
Database of bibliographic records for more than 22,000 construction documents. It can identify the current versions of regulations and construction standards, and highlight supporting material.

Construction Plus
Emap's web-based construction information service from it's 10 construction magazines, including NCE, AJ and Construction News and the Emap Glenigan market information service.

ENGnetBASE
Searches the full text of the engineering handbooks published by CRC Press. Also available as part of the Engineering Village 2 package.

ICE virtual library
Full text access to the ICE proceedings back to the first volumes of 1836. Access is by pay-per-view or subscription.

Knovel
Access to a selection of e-books, arranged in subject categories.

SteelBiz
The SCI's subscription based online information service, offering online access to SCI and other steel related publishers publications.

Taylor & Francis
Owner of Spon Press and Routledge, amongst others. Offers various subscription packages and individual ebook purchases for most of their titles published since 2000

ACI abstracts
Search ACI journal and conference papers back to 1929

ASCE database
Search ASCE journal and conference papers back to 1970

British library direct
Launched this year, a free searchable current contents service, covering the contents of each issue of the main journals held by the British Library.

Compendex
Bibliographic database available via Dialog or via Engineering Village 2. Compendex is the database version of the printed Engineering Index which began in 1884. The whole database back to that date is now available as a separate one-off archive purchase.

Engineering Village 2
An Elsevier service, offering access to the COMPENDEX and ENGnetBASE databases

Google Scholar
Google's attempt to enter the academic journal article searching market. Searches websites as well as publishers' sites so searching is not as effective as the commercial databases, although it is free.

Quakeline
Free earthquake engineering database, run by the Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research at the University of Buffalo

Scirus
A free database from Elsevier which searches all its own journals (and selected websites). Full text access is then available if you have online access to that journal or by pay-per-view.

Scopus
A major new product from Elsevier. Similar to Web of Science, offering extensive database searching across all journals by publishers in the CrossRef scheme. CrossRef is a consortium the major publishers who have developed a scheme whereby each individual paper, once available electronically, is given a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) enabling papers referenced in one paper to be hyperlinked to directly.

Swedish Geotechnical Institute Database
An excellent free geotechnical resource.

Web of science
Offered by ISI/Thomson, databases include Science Citation Index and Current Contents, all with hyperlinked referencing via CrossRef (see Scopus). ISI runs the impact factor rating system for journals which is given particular importance in the world of academia.
