Like-minded people defined rules for the use of concrete in buildings by setting up The Concrete Institute in 1908, and we have been going strong ever since. The first qualifying examinations were held in 1920.
1922 saw the name change to the Institution of Structural Engineers and incorporation by Royal Charter followed in 1934. One century down the line, we are still looking ahead, and our members continue to change our world.
The three main grades of professional membership that candidates aspire to are Chartered Membership, Associate-Membership and Technician Membership. Due to the exacting requirements of safety and efficiency placed on structural engineers, qualifying for either necessitates both technical and professional excellence.
