The Institution of Structural Engineers / IEAust Mutual Recognition Agreement
The Institution of Structural Engineers and the IEAust have signed a significant agreement that develops closer professional links between the two institutions. The agreement underlines the commitment of the Institution to playing a major role in the global structural engineering community.
The agreement facilitates the following:
- MIStructE members resident in Australia will be eligible for entry to MIEAust, CPEng and registration on NPER in the general area of practice of structural engineering, provided that they apply using the appropriate IEAust application form, and can demonstrate that they maintain CPD activities to IEAust requirements. The IEAust may require the applicant to undertake a short professional interview.
- MIEAust members who are of CPEng status and are chartered members of the IEAust Structural College, who are resident outside the EU will be eligible for entry into the AIStructE grade and entitled to use the designation chartered structural engineer, provided that they apply using the appropriate Institution application form.
- MIEAust members who are of CPEng status and are chartered members of the IEAust Structural College can apply to the Institution to sit the Chartered Membership examination, leading to MIStructE, without the necessity of undergoing an Institution professional interview, provided that they apply using the appropriate Institution application form.
The agreement also recognises the ability for associates to transfer to FIStructE, subject to the normal Institution peer assessment for MIStructE to FIStructE transfers and the possibility of reducing annual subscriptions for those individuals who hold corporate membership of both institutions.

The Institution of Structural Engineers / IPENZ Mutual Recognition Agreement
The Institution and the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) have entered into this agreement to contribute to the development of closer professional links between the two institutions, to aid with the dissemination of information and the maintenance of professional standards, and to better serve the interests of their members, the profession of structural engineering and the wider community.
The Agreement facilitates the following:
- Chartered structural engineers of the Institution, who are in good standing and who have undertaken an Institution professional interview and who are eligible for chartered engineer status in the United Kingdom, will automatically be able to transfer to membership of IPENZ in the class of Professional Member (MIPENZ) provided that they apply using the appropriate IPENZ application form.
- Registration of Institution Members, who are registered chartered engineers (UK) with the ECUK, as CPEng (New Zealand) will require them to provide evidence that they meet the competencies of a chartered professional engineer (New Zealand). Members of the Institution with CEng (UK) registration will be able to present these credentials as valid evidence for seeking to achieve entry to CPEng in New Zealand. The weight given to Institution membership and ECUK registration will decrease according to the time which has elapsed since the assessment and election of the member.
- Professional members of IPENZ (MIPENZ) who have undertaken an IPENZ competence assessment, who are working in the field of structural engineering, who are resident outside the EU and who have an appropriate engineering degree qualification recognised under the Washington Accord Agreement or equivalent, will be eligible for entry into the AIStructE grade, provided that they apply using the appropriate Institution application form.
- IPENZ Professional Members who have undertaken an IPENZ competence assessment and who are of CPEng (New Zealand) status may apply to the Institution to sit the chartered membership examination, leading to MIStructE, without the necessity of undergoing an Institution professional interview, provided that they apply using the appropriate Institution application form.
- Graduate Members of either IPENZ or the Institution are eligible to transfer to graduate membership of the other organisation if they have an appropriate engineering qualification recognised under the Washington or Sydney Accord agreements or equivalent.
- Each Institution shall extend to the members of the partner organisation, including student members, the same privileges and courtesies as extended to its own members at the same rates during a temporary (less than three year) stay in New Zealand or an Institution country with a branch/section division/group.
The agreement also recognises the ability for associates to transfer to FIStructE, subject to the normal Institution peer assessment for MIStructE to FIStructE transfers.
