The register has three sections:
- Chartered Engineer (CEng)
- Incorporated Engineer (IEng)
- Engineering Technician (EngTech)
As a licensed member, the Institution may register FIStructE, MIStructE, AIStructE, AMIStructE and TIStructE members with Engineering Council, within the appropriate section of the register. Registration provides additional recognition within the engineering profession both in the UK and internationally. In addition it provides access to unilateral recognition agreements with kindred bodies, but also access to national or state recognition in many parts of the world. This can be supplementary to agreements made by the Institution or may simply help facilitate these.
Registration with the Engineering Council is the UK Government's preferred means of identifying professionally qualified engineers, and will frequently provide the basis for acceptance of professional credentials by agencies and employers unfamiliar with the standing of professionally qualified structural engineers.
All candidates applying for registration must satisfy the competence standards set by Engineering Council and laid down in UK-SPEC and are only eligible to apply upon successful completion of the Institution's professional review and election to the relevant grade.
Registration and annual fees are collected by the Institution annually on behalf of Engineering Council and, following receipt of the initial registration fee, relevant details are forwarded by the Institution to the Engineering Council.
Engineering Council secretariat will then make arrangements for the applicant's details to be included on the relevant section of the register, provide a registration number and will inform the applicant when the process has been completed.
Further details and information regarding the Engineering Council can be found on the website www.engc.org.uk.
