Current academic requirements
Candidates who wish to progress to Chartered Membership must hold an Institution accredited MEng degree (normally 4 years full time or the equivalent) or equally hold a BEng (Hons) degree plus an appropriate period of Further Learning e.g. an accredited MSc degree or the Institution’s Technical Report Route.
Previous academic requirements
Prior to the September 1999 intake the minimum academic requirement for Chartered Membership as set out in ECUK’s SARTOR 2nd Edition was an accredited BEng (Hons) degree in civil/structural engineering or the equivalent. Candidates who started a BEng (Hons) degree (accredited for Chartered Membership) prior to 1999 should have been accredited under SARTOR 2nd Edition. If you are in any doubt please confirm this with the Membership department.
BEng (Hons) graduates who started their degrees in September 1999 onwards are encouraged to contact the Institution to confirm the accreditation status of their course and determine whether Further Learning is required to meet the current academic requirement e.g. an accredited MEng degree or the equivalent.
Mutual recognition agreements
Candidates holding a degree in civil and/or structural engineering recognised under an international agreement e.g. Washington Accord, FEANI etc currently meet the academic requirements for Chartered Membership.
Please note that FEANI accredited degrees must be 5 years in duration to meet the academic requirements for Chartered Membership.
The European Directive route allows engineers who have qualified and gained their academic qualifications in their home EU member state to apply to become a Chartered Member without the need for an academic assessment. This is subject to the degree being in civil and/or structural engineering and recognised by FEANI.
Applicants whose academic qualifications are not accredited or recognised under an agreement may apply for an academic assessment.
