Complimentary magazine subscription

All members receive a complimentary print and online subscription to the Institution's flagship publication; The Structural Engineer. Published monthly, each issue allows members to remain connected to the Institution, through the publication of: industry and Institution news; Project Focus papers; Technical articles (including a new series of Technical Guidance Notes); articles related to Professional Guidance; Research focused papers; Features that cover the Institution's major events and awards and an Opinion section containing "viewpoint" articles and readers' letters ("Verulam"). Furthermore, full access to The Structural Engineer's vast electronic archive - containing seminal material spanning more than 100 years, is provided.

Discounts on technical publications

The Institution's technical publications provide essential technical and regulatory information on basic structural design concepts through to design guidance, reports, manuals and codes - including the latest developments in Eurocodes.

Inclusion in a Regional Group

Our members are active in 105 countries. An introduction to your Regional Group, where you will be warmly welcomed, is offered.
Regional Groups are responsible for their own programmes of events, and provide essential support and networking opportunities to members at a local level.

Access to the Institution's library

Our library is one of the world's definitive centres for structural engineering research and technical information. Members enjoy free access to more than 60,000 works, in the form of books, journals, reports, standards, and papers. Two qualified librarians are on hand to conduct literature searches and answer your enquiries, in addition to offering:

  • a same-day loan service
  • a research service
  • partnership library arrangements
  • electronic dissemination of material

Access to technical meetings and events

Regular technical events (seminars, lectures and conferences) are held at our London headquarters and at various venues worldwide. If you're unable to attend in person, its likely that you'll still be able to watch the principal talks, via our webinar service.

Findanengineer.com is a comprehensive database of structural engineering practices across the UK that puts the public in touch with the best structural engineer for any project. It is a requirement that all firms listed in the database employ at least one member of the Institution.

Assistance with Professional Development

Structural engineers are continually developing their skills and knowledge base. The Institution is committed to ensuring that its members take an active interest in their IPD or  CPD, so that professional performance at the highest level is maintained. The reporting of CPD is now mandatory and the Institution provides all the necessary administrative support to make the process as simple as possible.

Access to the Benevolent Fund

For more than 70 years, the Benevolent Fund has been helping Institution members (and former members) and their dependants, who have encountered financial difficulties as a result of circumstances such as:

  • unemployment
  • illness, accident or disability
  • family problems
  • difficulties during retirement
  • bereavement

Financial assistance is provided according to an individual's needs, regardless of age, class of membership or country of residence. There is no requirement for an applicant to have subscribed to the Benevolent Fund.
