IStructE currently has a global membership of around 21000 engineers in over 100 countries.

The three main grades of professional membership that candidates aspire to are Chartered membership, Associate-Membership and Technician Membership. Due to the exacting requirements of safety and efficiency placed on structural engineers, qualifying for either necessitates both technical and professional excellence.

There are a number of routes to Chartered membership, Associate-Membership and Technician Membership all of which are equally demanding. In the main prospective members must have the necessary academic qualifications, usually an engineering degree, as well as sufficient, appropriate professional experience before they can apply to sit a Professional Review Interview. Upon passing the Interview, candidates applying for Technician Membership will qualify for membership and the designatory letters TIStructE. Applicants for Chartered and Associate-Membership then enter the Professional Review Exam. On passing the exam they then qualify for Chartered or Associate-Membership and the designatory letters MIStructE or AMIStructE.

However, due to the varying academic qualifications, experience and location of its members, IStructE offers a number of different grades of membership as well as a variety of routes to get there.
