New route to Chartered Membership for Associate-Members

The Council of the Institution, at its meeting on 25 May 2000, unanimously approved a route to Chartered Membership for those Associate-Members of the Institution who have reached a certain age, have appropriate experience and responsibility, and can demonstrate a high standard of competence in structural engineering.

Associate-Members who wish to apply for Chartered Membership through this route will be required to demonstrate that they:

  • are at least 35 years of age at the time of transfer;
  • have had experience in appointments of increasing responsibility in structural engineering over a period of at least 15 years;
  • have met the standards required in the Institution's core objectives for Initial Professional Development for Chartered Membership (and CEng registration);
  • have attained a level of competence comparable to their contemporaries who are Chartered Structural Engineers;
  • have maintained and updated their professional knowledge and skills on a continuous basis (CPD).

Associate-Members, who are eligible for this route, will be permitted to take the Chartered Membership Professional Review, incorporating the Professional Review Interview and the Chartered Membership examination. Successful candidates in the examination will proceed to election as a Chartered Member of the Institution (MIStructE) and will be entitled to use the designation 'Chartered Structural Engineer'.

Applicants should apply on application form 'M' for admission to the Professional Review by 1 September preceding the examination they intend to enter. In addition to form 'M', applicants are required to attach accompanying documentation to show evidence of their achievement, in the form of, examples of CPD, a two page experience report and a report on how the IPD core objectives for Chartered Membership have been satisfied. A Doc file featuring further information can be viewed by clicking here. A portfolio of work supporting the statements made in the IPD report will need to be submitted once instructed to do so by the Membership Department.

Once their eligibility has been determined, applicants will be referred to a Professional Review Interview organised locally by senior experienced Chartered Structural Engineers. Applicants successful in the Interview will be permitted to proceed to the Chartered Membership examination.

The Institution has obtained confirmation from the EC UK that candidates who have followed this route will be acceptable for registration as Chartered Engineers (CEng). Having attained the standard for Chartered Membership, the Institution's Council does not consider that it is appropriate for applicants to continue to be registered as Incorporated Engineers (IEng) and the Institution will therefore discontinue registration as IEng for Members qualifying through this route.

If you have any queries please contact the Institution's Professional Development Officer, Mr Allan Brereton.

Member via Research and Development

The Institution's Research and Development Route is intended for candidates who have gained their experience of structural engineering mainly through research and development activity.

Candidates must hold an appropriate accredited degree or equivalent, satisfy the IPD Core Objectives, pass the Professional Review Interview and submit published evidence of research and development work, of an original nature, that has been carried out over a sustained period. The research and development work will normally have been published in high quality refereed journals. Conference papers will not normally be accepted. The Institution's Research and Development Review will be in lieu of passing the Chartered Membership examination.

Further information and guidance on the Research and Development Route is available by clicking here.

Candidates who are already CEng registered with the EC UK through ICE, CIBSE, RINA, RAeS, IMechE or IMarEST may apply to enter the Institution's Chartered Membership examination without being required to submit evidence of their training and experience or undergo another Professional Review Interview. Such candidates must have taken the standard Professional Review with one of the Institutions listed above.
