Qualifying criteria
Student members are aspiring structural engineers who are studying on civil and/or structural engineering courses, either full-time or part-time.

If you are studying, or intending to study, on a course accredited or recognised by the Institution that will lead to the Chartered, Associate-Membership or Technician grades, you can apply to join the Institution as a free student member, which will include receive a hard copy of the Structural Engineer journal.

However, if you are not studying on an accredited or recognised course but fall into one of the categories below we can still offer limited free student membership, although access to the journal will be on an online basis only.

If you are studying a non-accredited or recognised course.

- If you are currently working towards an apprenticeship in a related field you may also be eligible for limited free student member. Although these courses are not currently accredited they could lead towards Technician membership.
- If you are studying A levels or similar qualifications and intend to go on to study structural or civil engineering at a higher level, you may wish to consider applying for this limited membership until you commence your further study.

Please note that if your course is not accredited or recognised you may be required to have your academic qualifications assessed by the Institution should you wish to transfer to Graduate membership upon the completion of your studies.

Other options
If you have completed a NC, ND, HNC, HND, foundation degree or the equivalent and are training to progress to a professional grade of membership, you may also join us as a Student member.

As a Student member in employment this means that you can work towards becoming a Technician or Associate-member.

You may have to undertake some further learning as well as the Initial Professional Development (IPD) programme.

How to apply
Online
The online student application form can only be used by students who are studying and eligible for free student membership (including those who would receive limited free membership).

Form S
If you have completed your studies and wish to apply for Student in Employment membership you will need to complete Form S Document and return it with the relevant subscription.

Once elected to the Student in Employment grade you will be sent an IPD (training) folder containing the requirements for either Technician or Associate-Membership depending upon the grade of membership which you are academically eligible to pursue.

Pro rata
We operate a pro rata system for application subscriptions, therefore you will only need to pay for the remaining months of the year when you apply.

For example, if you apply in June you will pay for June to December.

If you would like to know the pro-rata rate for your application please email membership@istructe.org to establish what rate you will be required to submit at the time of your application. 

* This reduction in fees applies only to candidates who apply for Student Employed membership within one year of completion of their studies.

Please note that if an application process takes longer than six months to complete the application will be rejected and the records deleted.
