Around the World photo competition
Published: 10/10/2012
Our Regional Groups and International Representatives have been competing in a unique and exciting challenge, designed to generate publicity for the Institution and the industry.
There has been an air of excitement in the marketing office at the Institution recently as the final stages of a PR & marketing campaign came together.
The campaign started several months ago with the aim to increase awareness of the Institution of Structural Engineers within the public eye and, ultimately, raise the profile of structural engineers on a global scale.
This may sound like a tall order, but with the collective efforts of our Regional Groups and International Representatives (chosen in order to achieve the best possible international involvement) we have been able to achieve something rather special.
A challenge was set to construct and photograph a selection of iconic buildings in the most incongruous of environments. The construction of the buildings was fairly challenging itself but, assigned to structural engineers, we were sure that the models were in the right hands.
The response from those taking part has been overwhelmingly positive, as the fantastic entries show.
The idea behind the campaign was to use the images as a platform to inspire the general public and bring to their attention the amazing work of structural engineers. The result of which is certainly something not to be missed:
The winning photograph will be chosen very shortly by our 2012 President, John Nolan. The prize for the winning entry is a two tickets to the Structural Awards, including travel and accommodation.
The challenge now is to fulfil our vision for increased international appreciation of the structural engineering profession. We hope that these images will go viral, spreading as they are talked about and shared by impressed members of the public. The more the images are shared and talked about, the wider the reach for the message to be heard. So please follow the campaign on Twitter (
