Supporting the role of the professional technician
Published: 24/05/2012
The Institution is pleased to support the initiative launched by the Technician Council to promote the role and highlight the important of professional technicians.
These are technicians who are highly skilled, who offer exceptional levels of creative as well as practical skills, and who are actively sought by employers. Professional technicians will meet the demand for higher levels of technical skill and professionalism that will help drive the economy and society of tomorrow.
An estimated 450,000 job opportunities will be created by 2020 that will require these higher skill levels. Taking into account the current levels of technicians in the UK, this highlights a huge skills gap.
Thus the Technician Council has developed a set of eight recommendations promote the role of professional technician.
The eight recommendations will generate the momentum needed to build the new professional technician identity, increase the pool of home grown technical skills and ultimately help bridge the skills gap in the UK.
They provide increased focus on the value and shortage of technical skills, encourage greater professionalism and unite professional technicians under a common banner.
