Legislation, codes and standards
The Institution of Structural Engineers provides advice and guidance about the legislation, codes and standards which govern the structural engineering profession.
This legislation and the relevant codes and standards are in place to ensure public and professional safety, improve standards and ensure international consistency.
Our aim is to make sure that our members follow the professional codes that guide the industry. We help our members understand these requirements by offering advice, support and producing guidance publications.
Contributing to the development of new legislation is also an important part of our work as a professional body. The Institution provides responses to consultations on behalf of our members.
The legislation, codes and standards that relate to structural engineering generally fall within three categories:
-
Eurocodes
-
BSI
-
International standards
The Institution Library stocks a wide range of current and superseded standards including the latest Eurocodes and their UK National Annexes. The Institution has also produced a series of manuals which outline the design process of building structures to Eurocodes. These are available to purchase in our online shop.
Standards from BSI can be bought through the BSI Bookshop. They are also available electronically to subscribers of the Construction Information Service (CIS) from IHS.
