Research
The Institution supports research related to the science and art of structural engineering.
The Institution's Research Fund is managed by the Research Panel which provides financial support to researchers.
The Research Panel meets three times a year and reports to the Engineering Practice Committee. To find out more please visit our Research Panel page.
Applications can be made to the Research Panel for grants to support undergraduate and post graduate research projects. Post graduates who have yet to complete their PhD are also invited to attend the annual Young Researchers’ Conference.
The Institution would like to thank all member contributions to the Research Fund.
Innovation & Research Focus
The Institution’s Research Fund sponsors Innovation & Research Focus whose primary aim is to promote the application of research in building and civil engineering.
Its brief articles on current research are written for practising engineers, architects, surveyors and their clients with the objective of disseminating research news as widely as possible.

Research funding
There are a number of bodies in the UK and internationally who fund research in this area. Below is a list of organisations which may be useful for your specific research project.
FP7UK
The Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) is the world's biggest single publicly funded research programme and is the main funding mechanism for supporting collaborative Research and Technological Development in the EU.
It will run from 2007-2013.
Funding will be provided for research activities in ten thematic areas:
-
Food, Agriculture and Biotechnology
-
Information and Communication Technologies
-
Nanosciences, Nanotechnologies, Materials and new Production Technologies
-
Energy
-
Environment (including Climate Change)
-
Transport (including Aeronautics)
-
Socio-Economic Sciences and the Humanities
-

UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)
The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) is the UK's main agency for funding research and related postgraduate training in engineering and the physical sciences. Including maths to materials science, and from information technology to structural engineering.
Health & Safety Executive (HSE)
The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has an integrated research programme which address both generic and specific occupational health and safety issues across the complete spectrum of HSC/E's regulatory responsibilities.
Royal Academy of Engineering
The Royal Academy of Engineering supports research by funding Research Chairs and fellowships as well as offering awards and travel grants to those in research.
