Wembley Stadium

Wembley Stadium is one of the most significant and revered sports grounds in the world, being home to the England football team. As a footballing institution, Wembley is no less than sacred to English fans and was the site of their beloved side's sole World Cup victory in 1966.

In 2003, the long standing structure at Wembley was demolished in preparation for a new state-of-the-art stadium with the flexibility to host live performances as well as traditional sporting fixtures. The new 'Venue of Legends' proved to be the most expensive sports facility ever constructed, costing over £1.5 billion to build. With spectator comfort a major priority, the updated stadium now boasts the largest covered seating capacity in the world.

Opened in 2007, the new Wembley's signature feature is its steel arch, breaking the record for the longest unsupported roof structure in the world. It reaches 140 metres into the air and is inclined at an angle so that its shadow does not reach the playing surface. The arch also supports the stadium's bowl shaped cover that protects spectators from the elements.
