Introduction

What do structural engineers do?

Structural engineers are involved in the design and supervision of the construction of all kinds of structures from houses, theatres, sports stadia, and hospitals, to bridges, oil rigs, space satellites and office blocks.

Skills and interests

Structural engineers make a difference and shape the built environment. They are people who enjoy innovation, a challenge, opportunities, responsibility and excitement in a varied career. Structural engineering presents both creative and technical challenges, and requires excellent problem solving skills.

Every construction project is unique and will involve the expertise of a number of professional people including a structural engineer. Structural engineers work as part of the design team and are responsible for safety factors, financial considerations and choice of materials.

The specialist skills of a structural engineer include calculating loads and stresses, investigating the strength of foundations and analysing the behaviour of beams and columns in steel, concrete or other materials to ensure the structure has the strength required to perform its function safely, economically and with a shape and appearance that is visually satisfying.

Studying structural engineering

Structural engineers typically have a degree in structural or civil engineering. Most accredited courses will require an A2 Level Maths, and another science is often desirable.

It is important that students select an accredited course which ensures that they will receive an excellent education covering all the principles of structural engineering. A list of accredited courses can be found at www.istructe.org.uk/study

An accredited qualification in structural engineering gives candidates an opportunity to progress to professional status, once the appropriate training has been completed.

Starting salaries for recent graduates range from £18,000 to £21,000.

Career prospects

There is huge opportunity and choice for young people starting out in a career in structural engineering. Structural engineering is a worldwide profession and membership of the Institution of Structural Engineers provides a qualification which will allow you to work almost anywhere in the world.
