The English Institute of Sport
The English Institute of Sport in Sheffield is the largest of the nine multi-sports hubs around the country
The English Institute of Sport provides a platform for the cross fertilisation of ideas and experiences between sports, and the development of world class support services to our leading athletes.
The project includes high performance training facilities for Olympic athletics, incorporating indoor training facilities, sports medicine and sports science, a 200m indoor athletics track with associated throwing and jump areas, three netball courts, two basketball courts, four judo courts, two boxing rings and a large table tennis area. All facilities have been designed to international playing standards.
The English Institute of Sport was opened in December 2003 and came in on time and within the budget of £24 million. It is already in use by elite athletes as a training facility and has hosted the Norwich Union World Indoor Athletics trials. The facilities are also open to local sports clubs and are in regular use.

Jaffel Versi
Age: 28
Job: Structural Engineer, SKM Anthony Hunts
I was responsible for designing the structural elements of the building. This involved liaising with the architect and other members of the design team at an early stage and working through various structural options to produce the most elegant and cost effective scheme. I then worked through the scheme to produce details for construction. Once the project was on site I worked with the contractor to sort out any problems that occurred and to ensure that the work progressed in accordance with the drawings.
I have been a structural engineer for five years, having completed a degree and Masters degree at the University of Sheffield. I am currently working on the new Adult Learning Centre at Wolverhampton College, a five-storey laboratory building for the University of Sheffield and the new campus for The Tresham Institute in Kettering.
