Name: Roger Knipe
Age: 25
Branch: Northern Ireland
Education: MEng, Structural Engineering with Architecture, Queen's University, Belfast, 2006
Employer: Scott Wilson
Current Position: Graduate Structural Engineer
Industry Experience/Projects:

Belfast Telegraph Printing Works: The owners of the printing works intended to install two new printing presses, which were much larger than those for which the building was designed. We therefore had to remove the existing floor to cast a concrete base for the new presses, and raise the roof to accommodate the extra height, all without disrupting the printing operations on the other two presses. As design engineer on this project I was responsible for the design of the new floor and roof trusses, and coordination between structural and mechanical engineering aspects of the project. I also spent a lot of time on site during the delicate operation to raise the roof- it had to be literally millimetre perfect!

Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast: Scott Wilson has a long-standing involvement with the redevelopment of Northern Ireland's largest hospital, and I have been involved in structural design of many different elements, including support for a listed Victorian Corridor structure whilst a new tunnel was excavated beneath it.

Hodson Bay Aquarium, Athlone: I am currently working as project engineer on this steel framed building with reinforced concrete exhibition tanks. We are working to quite a demanding timescale as the client needs to have the building operational in time for the tourist season.

Specialist Interests:

At university my dissertation was on Folded Plate Timber Roofs, for which I won the national TRADA Timber Engineering Student Prize. Timber engineering still holds great interest for me.

I'm quite interested in old buildings- one of my ambitions is to work on the restoration of a prominent historic structure.

Hobbies/Interests:

I'm involved in music and youth work with my local church. I also enjoy mountaineering, and help on the family farm at weekends.
