Young Structural Engineer of the Year 2002

Martin Simpson

The winner of the Young Structural Engineer of the Year 2002 award was Martin Simpson, a Senior Engineer at Arup's Manchester office. He was presented with the award at the Structural Awards 2003, which took place at Gibson Hall, City of London.

Martin was nominated for the award based on the outstanding work he had undertaken in designing the roof for the City of Manchester Stadium.

The award also took into account his work on the stability analysis for two other projects: the new Meteorological Office Headquarters in Pinhoe, Exeter, Devon and The Slot project, a new 24 storey apartment block in Greater Manchester.

Martin said: "I was given a fantastic opportunity in being able to work on the City of Manchester Stadium, and on the other projects I have been involved in, since joining Arup. So I am really pleased to have been given such recognition for what I've achieved this early on in my structural engineering career. I hope the rest of my career continues in this way."

The runner-up was Marie Mangan and she received £500 and a certificate of commendation.
