Hydro-Electric development in Scotland, always the cause of considerable controversy and opposition, was established on a new basis by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Act, 1943, passed during the war as a non-party measure, to permit the orderly development of hydro electric power in the North of Scotland, as a matter of national interest. Mr. Gower B. R. PIMM (Past-President), proposing a vote of thanks to the author, said it was always beneficial to look backward, although he did not think it necessary to go as far as the fabulous bird which always flew backwards so that it could see where it had been. Nevertheless, it was good to look back and they had learned a lot from the lecture of the wonderful possibilities of cast-iron.

Geological factors enter into all foundation work for structural engineering. Examples of the application of geological science to site investigations, in a number of fields, illustrate the value of this approach. Sources of geological data available to the engineer are official publications, both maps and descriptive memoirs, of the various Geological Surveys of the world, unpublished information held by these Surveys, and the publications of Geological Societies and Associations. While little or no detailed information may exist for large tracts of the earth, much has been recorded for the more populous areas, which, if taken into account in engineering works, would in many instances save both time and money.
