The objective of the paper is to set out for the benefit of the practising structural engineer who has no specialist soil mechanics expertise, the basic principles affecting the planning and execution of soil investigations for new structural engineering works. Current practice is reviewed and the various types of site investigations, technical aspects of field work and laboratory testing, and contractual arrangements for their execution are discussed. I.H.
