Hayward (F) (Cass Hayward & Partrlers): Steel composite decks, along with inverted T pretensioned beams and in situ infill as tested by the authors, currently provide the most durable forms of short-span bridge. Professional indemnity insurance Dilemmas for consulting engineers in deciding reasonable levels of indemnity insurance to carry were discussed in our column in February by Terence Holden-Brown and in April by Malcolm Bowden. Mr C. K. Davies, corresponding from Balawayo, Zimbabwe, offers what he sees as a relatively trouble-free solution! Sometime ago, I addressed myself to the problem of PI insurance through the Institution’s secretariat. The gist of my suggestion was that of cover being provided by the Institution via the membership structure. It was my contention that, in this way, the conduct of our members might be monitored and penalties applied where the level of claim becomes unreasonable. Verulam
