Bill Ward retired from West Clamorgan County Council last year after 49 years’ service in local government, with the last few years as County Engineer. He is a well-respected member of the engineering community in South Wales and particularly in the IStructE Branch, of which he is a Past Chairman. This interview was conducted by Dr. Howard Wright at the 1988 Branch AGM and proved so successful that this transcript was requested. An Integral Rail and Road Bridge at the National Garden Festival Site, Ebbw Vale

A new 5Om-long bridge of two spans carries a single railway and roadway across rail sidings in a reclaimed industrial area. Track and road are carried on an integral deck with running rail set flush with the roadway pavement. Composite steel and precast unit construction was used to achieve rapid implementation.
