This paper discusses the design and construction of the King's Health Partners Cancer Centre, including the constraints imposed by an inner-city site of archaeological interest, the requirements associated with specialist medical equipment, and the incorporation of extensive off-site construction methods into the structural design.

Synopsis

The King’s Health Partners Cancer Centre was born out of the Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust's wish to consolidate its cancer treatment facilities. Previously spread across the separate Guy's and St Thomas' hospital sites, cancer treatment would be relocated into a single, world-class centre on the Guy's campus. This single building would combine the complex imaging, radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment equipment, research laboratories and support services associated with cancer treatment under one roof.

This paper discusses the design and construction of this award-winning building, including the constraints imposed by an inner-London site of archaeological interest, the requirements associated with specialist medical equipment, and the incorporation of extensive off-site construction methods into the structural design.
