Structural engineers may come across situations that pose an ethical dilemma and are required to be clear about their level of ethical duty. The Institution has produced guidance and example scenarios where an ethical decision must be taken to help structural engineers understand and manage the ethical issues they may come across at work. The guidance provides members with assistance in determining the right approach to take. The Institution requires members to demonstrate high ethical standards and failure to adopt appropriate standards may lead to disciplinary action.
All members must abide by the Institution's Code of Conduct. To this end, all members sitting their professional review interview are assessed on their understanding of ethical behaviour. We also recommend members subscribe to the Statement of Ethical Principles for the Engineering Profession, published by the Engineering Council.
