Martin Powell: Chief Executive
An honours graduate in Earth Sciences, Martin developed his career in the quarrying extractive industry, initially with Australian corporation Pioneer Concrete where he worked in a number of roles over a 10 year period.
On joining Redland, one of the UK’s leading building materials producers, his subsequent roles were involved with business acquisitions, mergers and restructuring until Redland itself was acquired by Lafarge, a French multinational heavy materials group. There he joined a world-wide business performance team supporting knowledge transfer and best practice across Lafarge’s international concrete businesses.
After a seven year period as Chief Executive of the UK’s Concrete Society, he joined The Institution of Structural Engineers as Chief Executive in 2009.
Darren Byrne: Deputy Chief Executive, Membership and Education Services Director
Darren joined the Institution in November 1999, following almost five years with the Institution of Civil Engineers. During his extensive involvement with professional engineering institutions Darren has gained experience in all aspects of the professional membership qualifying process, from academic qualifications through to Initial Professional Development (IPD) and finally the Professional Review.
He was appointed Director of Membership and Education in February 2008, and Deputy Chief Executive in January 2017. During this time Darren has overseen the operation of the Membership and Education Directorate, from careers and accreditation activities to the Professional Review and CPD. Darren has supported the Chief Executive in the development of membership and education policies and specifically the introduction of new, more accessible and inclusive, routes to membership
Darren, with his team, continues to develop resources and initiatives to better support members, throughout the world, in developing competence.
Simon Flanagan: Chief Operating Officer
Simon joined the Institution in October 2018, bringing twenty years’ experience in business leadership and event management in the commercial, government and charity sectors. His previous roles include Arts and Entertainment, Group Operations Director for IMG; Director of Operations and Property for innovation foundation, Nesta; and most recently Managing Director at CID.
Simon leads the Institution’s Marketing and Comms, Commercial, Events, IT, Facilities and Finance departments, providing operational support for the whole Institution as well as driving commercial, publishing, event and marketing activities and content. As part of the Executive Leadership Team he coordinates input from the Board, CEO, departments and colleagues to maintain an agile strategy that delivers the Institution’s vision and mission.
Simon’s aim upon joining the Institution is to drive efficiency and operation excellence within his teams; whilst working with staff and members to create the best suite of products for the membership be that CPD courses, publications or events.
Dr Susan Doran: Company Secretary and Director of Regulations
Susan gained an honours degree in Civil Engineering at King’s College London after which she remained at the College undertaking research, which led to the award of a PhD in 1985.
Following a short period as a university lecturer in Scotland, she joined Arup in 1987 where she spent eight years working with multidisciplinary teams on the structural design of major building engineering projects. During this time she became a Chartered Civil Engineer.
Susan joined The Institution of Structural Engineers in April 1995 as Manager, Technical Activities (promoted to Technical Director in 2000) and was responsible for the Institution’s technical work until taking up her current post of Company Secretary and Director of Regulations in July 2009. Whilst working at the Institution she qualified as a Chartered Secretary.
In addition Susan is Company Secretary for Structural Engineers Registration Limited (SER) a wholly owned subsidiary company of the Institution currently operating in Scotland and Jersey.
Tina Cardy: Director of Communications
Tina joined the Institution in 2012 as Director of Communications following two years with a sister engineering institution. Tina’s commercial and marketing experience has taken her through both profit and non-profit environments including pharmacy and engineering for the past nine years. Prior to this her career spanned more than a decade in the media industry working within a number of markets developing both off and online publishing products and national events and exhibitions in both consumer and B2B environments.
Tina has an MSc Marketing specialising in marketing research and digital development. She is a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, and has also lectured at post graduate level for the CIM. She is a member of the CIMCIG (construction industry committee) with a remit to further the scope of marketing and communications in the construction industry.
Combining her significant experience in PR, events and digital marketing, Tina’s passion today is the growing convergence of all marketing communication activities and the drive to share knowledge digitally at a global level.
Silvia Pilotto - Digital and Data Director
Silvia is an experienced digital strategist committed to putting digital transformation at the heart of the Institution’s corporate strategy. She is passionate about the appliance of technology to improve people’s lives and the good of the environment, believing in its transformative power to make a difference daily.
Silvia has ten years’ experience working as a senior digital strategist in the not-for profit sector, after previous roles at World Animal Protection (where she lead a global team based in 15 countries) and at Barnardo’s (whose website ranked among the eight most successful in the community-humanitarian industry during her tenure). Originally from Italy, Silvia has lived and worked for many years in Ireland and Portugal before settling in the UK with her husband, Paul.
