(Above) The winning team!
Our Scotland Regional Group held a Student Model Competition on 1 April at Heriot-Watt University. Institution Fellow, David Millar, talks us through the event.
The Model Competition is a great chance to introduce Scottish university students to structural engineering through a fun and informative event, giving them practical experience of problem solving and team working, and allowing them to mix with students from other universities. It’s also a wonderful opportunity for us to give something back after a lifetime in engineering, and explain the benefits of Institution membership.
The students always seem to take a lot away from the event. Many participants take the time to thanks us for running the event, and we often receive inquiries about future competitions.
We have run the event for over 20 years and it’s an established mark on the university calendar.
We invite all Scottish universities to provide up to two teams of three students. This year the event was attended by five universities (The University of Dundee, Glasgow Caledonian University, The University of Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt University and The University of Strathclyde), each providing two teams drawn from all year groups. Prizes of up to £180 were available to the winners.
On the day Team 5 from Glasgow Caledonian University took first prize, followed by Team 10 from Heriot-Watt University and Team 2 from The University of Dundee. Congratulations to our winners and thanks to all who took part!
We also must thank Heriot Watt University - the competition could not happen without the time and commitment of their helpful, enthusiastic staff. We’re looking forward to next year’s event at the University of Dundee.
