The Institution has 32 Regional Groups active around the world offering a great range of technical talks, site visits, exam preparation courses and unique networking opportunities: this snapshot shows the range of activity offered by just three Regional Groups and one Young Members’ Group during 2018.
Susanna Wills, Queensland Young Members Group
“Site visits are a great way for both students and engineers to learn more about different construction types and techniques. We usually get the engineering company or builder to do a short presentation about the project, followed by the site visit.
“We also attend nearby Universities and give presentations on the Institution and the advantages of free Student Membership.”
Francis Lok - Chairman, Singapore Regional Group
“Each year we have around 15-20 participants on our exam preparation courses in April and May. Not all are candidates: some attend to refresh their understanding of structural design.
“When we organise site visits we select projects that embrace state-of-the-art design/construction methodology, showcasing truly special sites to Graduate and Student Members.
“Our bi-annual Singapore Structural Awards celebrate great engineering in categories including bridges, heritage structures, membrane structures and commercial structures, residential structures, communication towers and others.”
John Price, Chair of UAE Regional Group
“Our exam preparation course covers an introduction to the exam, issues like time management and a discussion of past exam papers, with around 30 attendees at each event.
“We are very active and enjoy strong relationships with local universities, as this is where the majority of our activities, lectures and CPD talks take place.
“The Regional Group End of Year event is when local engineers, universities and companies are awarded a notional prize for their commitment to engineering in the region and assisting the Group in promoting the Institution. This is an annual event and a great opportunity to promote the skills of our members.”
Laura Clow, Scottish Regional Group
“Our annual dinner sees prizes awarded to the best engineering student at 10 Scottish Universities. We are also involved with a number of education events including modelling competitions.
“Our public speaking competition was held for the first time last year and saw seven young engineers deliver a five to seven minutes speech on engineering to a panel of judges: we’ll be running the competition again this year as it was a great success.”
