Become a member of the Institution
The Institution of Structural Engineers is here to help you on your journey to becoming a professionally qualified structural engineer.
For over 100 years, the Institution has been recognised as the world's leading international membership organisation for professional structural engineers.
What are the benefits of becoming a member?
Membership of the Institution confirms your competence as an engineer working to the highest standards in the world. Many engineers see membership as their highest demonstration of professional achievement.
As a member, you'll have support throughout your career. From your initial training at college or university to becoming a senior engineer with many years of experience. All members receive discounts and access to free events, products and services.
Membership is a way to make a difference. The Institution works to influence governments, shape regulations and campaign for safety, sustainability and technical standards. Be a part of the way we shape the profession, drive forward projects and activities, campaign on engineering-related political issues, and support academic, technical and research initiatives.
How does it work?
There are six grades of membership:
- Student Member
- Graduate Member
- Technician Member
- Chartered Member
You can apply for Student membership while studying and for Graduate membership once your higher education studies are complete.
The professional membership grades (Technician, Associate, Chartered and Fellow) have various entry requirements. There are two main stages to become professional qualified:
- The Professional Review Interview. This is designed to test your ability and ensure you have satisfied all the core objectives for the grade of professional membership you have applied for.
- Examination. The seven hour exam tests your understanding of structural engineering principles, an ability to communicate structural design, and provide an effective solution to a structural design problem.
Only the best thinkers, designers and innovators successfully meet our entrance requirements. It's a tough journey, but it has to be.
