President's Inaugural Address

This event is an Institution tradition whereby the Past Presidents, members of Council and others concerned with Institution affairs, have the opportunity to welcome the new President and to pay tribute to the immediate outgoing president for their hard work and progress throughout their term.

This event features a drinks reception and Address from the incoming President, which is a great opportunity to get to know them from the offset of their term.

Going for Gold in a Changing World

We are delighted to announce that Ian Firth FREng, BSc, MSc, DIC, CEng, FIStructE, FICE, FConsE was appointed 2017 President of The Institution of Structural Engineers. Ian will give his inaugural address to the Institution at its Bastwick Street Headquarters in London on 12 January. The theme of his address was “Going for Gold in changing World”.

Ian said:

“It is a huge honour to be appointed President of The Institution of Structural Engineers, an organisation whose membership boasts some of the most brilliant engineering minds on the planet.

“During my Presidency I look forward to meeting many more of our worldwide membership, learning more about their work, and hopefully helping to inspire and encourage them all to go further and do better in all that they do.

“2017 holds huge promise for our profession, but presents challenges too; perhaps the greatest of which is how to make sense of the very rapid changes in digital design technology, which presents both enormous opportunities and risks for structural engineers, as the guardians of public safety.”
