Join us online to hear Professor Don McQuillan give his keynote address presented at ASEC 2020. Following his presentation Martin Powell (Chief Executive) will give an update on the Institution both locally and worldwide.
Practicing the art of structural engineering – i.e. designing elegantly, efficiently and economically, is one thing. Doing it competently and safely – and avoiding the pitfalls and bear traps, and staying in business – is quite another matter – because “things do go wrong”.
Don’s presentation is based on several hundred Expert Witness reports done in the last twenty years. It highlights themes and trends, and deals with recurring issues and lessons to be learned. He will also explain his role in the recent high-level Commission of Inquiry in Hong Kong and the outputs from the published report.
The presentation concludes with the emphasis on the “costs” incurred when something “goes wrong” and how the only winner is the legal profession. More importantly it focuses on the need for increased competence and how it might be periodically re-tested in future.
Professor Don McQuillan FIStructE, 100th President of the Institution of Structural Engineers
Don is a director of RPS, a global energy resources and environmental consultancy. He specialises in project managing multidisciplinary projects and in structural and forensic engineering.

He has authored many technical papers, some award winning. Don is also a RAE Visiting Professor at Queen’s University Belfast. He is passionate about mentoring younger engineers, providing technical support and guidance to members and promoting the Institution as the world leader in structural engineering.
Martin Powell, Chief Executive of IStructE
An honours graduate in Earth Sciences, Martin developed his career in the quarrying extractive industry, initially with Australian corporation Pioneer Concrete where he worked in a number of roles over a 10 year period.
On joining Redland, one of the UK’s leading building materials producers, his subsequent roles were involved with business acquisitions, mergers and restructuring until Redland was acquired by Lafarge, a French multinational heavy materials group.
There he joined a world-wide business performance team supporting knowledge transfer and best practice across Lafarge’s international concrete businesses.
After a seven year period as Chief Executive of the UK’s Concrete Society, he joined The Institution of Structural Engineers as Chief Executive in 2009.
